On Thursday, Ukraine has temporarily shut down its border with Russia, following the decision of the National Security and Defense Council regarding a number of urgent measures to strengthen the country’s defense capacities, which began immediately after its promulgation by decree of President Petro Poroshenko, informs the Unian Ukrainian news agency.

The document stipulates the temporary closure of all of the control points on the state border between Ukraine and the Russian Federation, be it by vehicle, maritime transportation methods, or by foot.

Furthermore, according to the document, the National Security and Defense Council recommends that the Government adopts measures for the unilateral delimitation of the state border between Ukraine and the Russian Federation and to ensure the proper management of the border between the two countries.

The Decision of the National Security and Defense Council (of the 28th of August, 2014):

„Regarding urgent measures on the nation’s security and on increasing its defense capacity” has a semi-confidential character, so only some of its provisions were posted on the website of the Presidency of Kiev.

On the 28th of August, the Council decided that, starting fall, they will resume the recruitment for military service in the armed forces and instructed the MFA to begin consultations with the countries signatories of the Budapest Memorandum, regarding the situation in south-eastern Ukraine. Ukraine’s MFA will also contact the UN’s Security Council, NATO, the EU, OSCE and other strategic partners to request their support.
