Romania has initiated efforts to evacuate its citizens from the Gaza Strip, with some 200 Romanian nationals requesting assistance from the authorities in Bucharest to leave the area, according to Euractiv.

The crisis management team of Romania’s Foreign Ministry has taken action to ensure the safe evacuation of these citizens after they notified the Romanian Representation Office in Ramallah to be evacuated.

“200 people have requested our support. We are in contact with them and want to assure them that Romania is doing everything in its power to identify the best and safest solution for their evacuation”, the Foreign Ministry says.

However, due to the sensitive and precarious security situation in the region, the evacuation has not yet been possible. “An evacuation must be prepared extremely thoroughly not to endanger the lives of those we want to save. The situation is very sensitive”, added the Ministry.

More than 350 Romanian citizens currently reside in the Gaza Strip.

Meanwhile, at the request of the Ukrainian Embassy in Bucharest, Romania has also assisted Ukrainian citizens evacuated from Israel.

A group of 220 Ukrainian citizens arrived on Saturday in Romania and received medical care from the specialized staff at the Emergency Reception Unit of the Bucharest Emergency Clinical Hospital. Some will continue their journey, while approximately 40-50 Ukrainians will be transported to temporary accommodations.

On Monday, another transport of Ukrainian citizens is expected at Avram Iancu International Airport in Cluj-Napoca.
