Romania is ready to face any economic and humanitarian consequences that a lasting conflict between Russia and Ukraine could generate, President Klaus Iohannis said on Thursday, according to See News.
“We are in constant contact with our allies and partners in NATO, the European Union and the United States to find the best solutions and provide humanitarian assistance if the situation calls for it,” Iohannis said during a televised news conference after a meeting of the country’s Supreme Council of National Defence.
Iohannis also stressed that Romania will not be drawn into the military conflict in Ukraine and that all measures are being taken to prevent Romanians’ security and safety from being affected by the conflict.
“Dear Romanians! I know that you are worried about the conflict that is taking place not far from the our borders, but I assure you: No Romanian should be afraid for his safety and that of his family! Romania benefits from the widest possible security guarantees. NATO and European Union membership, a strong strategic partnership with the United States form an extremely strong security umbrella,” stated Iohannis.
The president also called for a consistent consolidation of NATO’s eastern flank.
NATO said on Thursday that it is deploying additional defensive land and air forces to the eastern part of the Alliance, as well as additional maritime assets following Russia’s attack on Ukraine.
Earlier on Thursday, Romania’s government said that it is monitoring the country’s natural gas supply and that it is preparing to receive refugees from Ukraine.
Romania has a 600 km border with Ukraine.
