Romania‘s President Klaus Iohannis nominated former army General Nicolae Ciucă as prime minister-designate on Thursday tasking him to form a government to end a month-long policy stalemate and political crisis.
“I’ve said at every meeting that we need a solution now. The political crisis needs to end, we need a government that can solve the issues that concern the Romanians and we need to end this crisis. It has taken too long, going on like this is unacceptable,” said Iohannis.
Ciucă was proposed by the National Liberal Party (PNL).
Ciucă, 54, a Liberal currently serving as Romania’s defense minister, served in U.S.-led military campaigns in Iraq and Afghanistan. Ciucă has 10 days to draft a cabinet lineup and seek a parliamentary vote of confidence.
Ciucă said he would negotiate with all responsible parties to form a government as soon as possible.
