Margareta, Custodian of the Crown in Romania on Friday sent her condolences to The Queen on the death of Prince Philip, who she described as a „father figure”, according to royalcentral.co.uk.

Margareta’s late father, King Michael of Romania, was Philip’s cousin and the two had spent a lot of time together in their childhoods. Prince Philip was among Margareta’s godparents and played an important role in her upbringing.

The statement from Romania’s royals read:

”Her Majesty, the Prince Consort, together with the entire Royal Family, have learned with untold sadness the news of the passing to the eternal ones of His Royal Highness Prince Philip, The Duke of Edinburgh. The British Sovereign’s consort died this morning (Friday) at Windsor Castle.

Prince Philip and King Michael, born in the same year, were cousins and kept a lifelong friendship. The Duke of Edinburg was a godfather of Her Majesty The Custodian of the Crown and supported her through school, high school and college. Prince Philip, with Queen Elizabeth, has always been present in the life of the Romanian Royal Family.

After the death of King Michael, for Her Majesty Margareta, The Duke of Edinburg was a father figure.

All generations of the Royal Romanian and British Families were close, but for today’s generation, Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip remain as spiritual role models, fundamental sources of inspiration.”
