Hydroelectric-Plant Costa Rica

For the first 75 days of 2015, Costa Rica used 100% renewable energy to power itself.

Four hydroelectric plants have been working at full capacity for the past three months, thanks to the abundant rain that has been falling in the country.

Starting December of the previous year, the country has not burned any fossil fuels to sustain its energy needs, and hydropower was the source of 80% of its energy in 2014.

Costa Rica is planning to become carbon-neutral before 2021.  This started with the Government approving a 958 million USD geothermal project.

Costa Rica has been ranked second in place by the World Economic Forum, for its communications and electricity infrastructure, after Uruguay.

94% of Costa Rica’s energy needs are currently being met by renewable energy sources.
