The name of the Islamic State (IS) militant, known as “Jihadi John”- who appeared in numerous videos with Western hostages which were to be killed by the jihadists – is Mohammed Emwazi and he is from Western London, BBC reports.

Emwazi was first seen in an IS recording from August, last year, alongside American journalist James Foley, who was executed.

Subsequently, it is believed that he appeared in the videos that preceded the executions by beheading of American journalist Steven Sotloff, of Brits David Haines and Alan Henning and of American Abdul-Rahman Kassig.

Last month, the IS militant appeared in a short video along with Japanese hostages Haruna Yukawa and Kenji Goto, shortly before they were killed.

It appears that Mohammed Emwazi has ties with a suspect who traveled to Somalia in 2006 and is allegedly involved in financing the Al-Shabaab Somali Islamist group.
