Karla Perez, 22, suffered a brain hemorrhage on the 8th of February, while she was pregnant. Although brain-dead, she was kept alive for a stunning 54 days so she could give birth to her baby. Thanks to a team of over 100 doctors and nurses, little baby Angel was born.

This is the first time in 16 years that a brain-dead woman is kept alive in the U.S. in order to give birth.

The target was to keep her alive 10 more weeks, but her condition had gotten worse two weeks ahead of the planned date. The doctors had to deliver the baby prematurely, but they are optimistic that he will be fine. Angel is currently in an incubator in NICU (neonatal intensive care unit) and he is being fed through a tube.

Mrs. Perez’s organs helped save the lives of three people, who were on the waiting lists for a transplant.
